Team ICO director Fumito Ueda revealed some more details about The Last Guardian to Famitsu (via Andriasang), and said that additional information will be shared at either E3 or the Tokyo Game Show this year.Nothing was said of how the game will actually play, but the magazine did uncover details on where the studio's efforts are currently being focused. A lot of the development time right now is said to be on the cat-eagle creature thing that follows the child around – Ueda explains that he wants to give the creature a feeling of life and 'actual existence'.
The Last Guardian was announced formally at E3 2009, and all signs are pointing to a 2011 release date, although nothing has been officially confirmed. On the time frame, Ueda said; “We're at the stage where we're looking into it. Once that has been decided upon, it won't be long until release. With
Last Guardian, we're working intently with the aim of making a game that offers a kind of fun that cannot be experienced elsewhere, so I'd like everyone to wait just a bit more.”
Elsewhere, Ueda states that he is getting stuck into the storyboard work and other creative elements himself, but less so than
ICO or
Shadow of the Colossus due to the studio's increased size and the PS3's power to automatically handle a lot of the expression work.
He says that the pressure to make
The Last Guardian a great game has intensified due to the fanbase and the “greater backup” of the development staff. As a result, he revealed that he was shocked to see such a positive reaction from the E3 2009 announcement, but is currently trying to ignore the comments and simply get stuck into working on the game.
A real trooper, right there. Hopefully we can hear some more concrete information on the game at E3 this year.
