Nintendo of Japan has announced that it is to gradually terminate its contract with Sharp Electronics, the company that has manufactured the screen since the Game Boy Advance went into production last year.
The Sharp screens have come in for some hefty criticism from all sides for being simply too dark. Brilliant games like Tony Hawk for the Game Boy Advance are rendered almost unplayable unless played in the sunshine or in some other kind of bright light source.
The new contract has been awarded to Matsushita, a company to which Nintendo has often favoured for component production of its hardware.
Reports state that initially, Matsushita will only be producing around 5% of all GBA screens. Matsushita will then be investing around 2-3 Billion-Yen to take its Ishikawa production plant up to speed to handle Nintendo’s demand for LCD screens.
It is also expected that Matsushita, a company with proven experience in the manufacturing of LCD screens for portable computers and car satellite navigation units, will be making the screens at a greatly reduced price.
