Nintendo has announced that the Wii has sold over six million units in less than three years, making it the fastest selling console in UK history.Chart Track-GfK has confirmed the numbers today, revealing that from its UK launch on 8th December 2006 to the week ending 28th November 2009, the six million sales target was passed. With the Wii’s worldwide fortunes
taking a slight tumble as of late, this news will likely provide some relief to Nintendo executives that all is not lost.
Nintendo UK bossman David Yarnton said of the news, “We’re very pleased Wii seems to have captured the imagination of over six million families across the UK and reached such a landmark sales figure in such a short space of time.
“We'll work even harder to ensure that the interest in Wii stretches over months and years, appealing to people of all ages and gaming experience.”
The console race is settling to a level pegging, with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in particular gaining massive traction in 2009. It will be interesting to see if the Wii can continue the incredible pace it set in its boom - there’s still a way to go before it can topple the PlayStation 2’s crown of best-selling console of all time (10 million units).
