Movie buffs, rejoice! Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has officially announced that its ‘Video Delivery Service’ will launch today in the UK, France, Germany and Spain, with over 2,000 movies available to rent or buy across all four territories.
The service is part of a beefier update to the overall PSN Store, which will include PS1 Classic Metal Gear Solid and indie title Critter Crunch. The movies can be played in Standard Definition or High Definition and transferred to your PS3 or PSP.
It seems the extra time we’ve had to wait for the service to roll out in Europe was not spent twiddling thumbs - almost every major studio has committed to releasing titles old and new to the ‘VDS’, among them being Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Lionsgate (UK only), Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures (obviously), Universal and Warner Bros. Sony have also announced region-specific indie movie releases, from labels such as Optimum (UK), Kinowelt (Germany), EuropaCorp (France) and Vértice Cine (Spain).
To celebrate the video store’s launch, SCEE are running two promotions. New PS3 owners who register a PSN account between the 19th and 30th November will get a free copy of Transformers; while those of us who already have a PS3 and PSN account can buy Angels and Demons and get a copy of The Da Vinci Code for free.
“The launch of the PlayStation Network video delivery service extends our entertainment offering and provides consumers with another way to access their favourite movies, whether at home or on the go,” said SCEE’s President and CEO, Andrew House, clearly super-happy at this quotable occasion. “With the choice of content constantly expanding, including full games, bite-size downloadable “minis” games, demos and now movies too, the PlayStation Network is the gateway to a world of entertainment.”
When the service is enabled today, you’ll be able to switch between the Game and Video stores using a tab at the top of the PlayStation Store. In the UK, SPOnG was told that over 800 movies will hit today, with 50 new (and old) films being added every week. The selection is nothing to sniff at either, with The Dark Knight, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Star Trek headlining the list.
