Here we go again.
The Daily Mail, always good for a scaremonger or two, has provided its readership with another
kneejerk reaction to some 'sick filth'. This time, it's Activision's
Modern Warfare 2 (of course) with the '
civilian slaughter scene' reported the other week being the primary focus for the overprotective paper's ire.
Referring to a segment in the game where the player infiltrates a Russian terrorist circle to learn more information about how they operate, the
Daily Mail states that a skippable cutscene that features innocent bystanders murdered in an airport means that the game allows “players [to] kill civilians in terror attacks”.
Fellow kneejerker, Labour MP Keith Vaz, has vowed to air concerns about the game in Parliament today, stating he was dismayed at the 'level of violence in the game'.
Activision suggests that those concerned should probably play the game before passing judgement, with Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling making a
public statement to that effect on Twitter. The publisher
clarified the nature of the scene about a week and a half ago – here's its statement again, repeated for the
Daily Mail's benefit.
“Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 features a deep and gripping storyline in which players face off against a terrorist threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war. In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism. At the beginning of the game, players encounter a mandatory 'checkpoint' in which they are warned that an upcoming segment may contain disturbing elements and they can choose not to engage in the gameplay that involves this scene. Consistent with its content, the game has been given an 'M' for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The rating is prominently displayed on the front and back of the packaging, as well as in all advertising."
