Some news that might upset PC shooter fans -
Rage looks set to join
Modern Warfare 2 in not having dedicated servers.
id Software co-founder told
Variety that, “It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers.”
Carmack apparently reckons that dedicated servers are a remnant of an earlier time in PC gaming, but recognises that many gamers are still fond of them and is pleased that id will not be the first company to ditch them.
“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that”, he said. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”
Infinity Ward confirmed that it
would not provide dedicated servers for MW2, using its IW.net system for matchmaking, last month. It wasn't a popular decision, attracting upwards of 180,000 gamers to sign a
petition against the move. The company responded that it is
prioritising "fans" over "the modders and the tuners".
Carmack, unsurprisingly, reckons
Rage is looking good. "
Doom 4 is obviously a bit further out”, he added.
