Lack of Rage Dedicated Servers Invites... Rage

Rage joins Modern Warfare 2

Some news that might upset PC shooter fans - Rage looks set to join Modern Warfare 2 in not having dedicated servers.

id Software co-founder told Variety that, “It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers.”

Carmack apparently reckons that dedicated servers are a remnant of an earlier time in PC gaming, but recognises that many gamers are still fond of them and is pleased that id will not be the first company to ditch them.

“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that”, he said. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”

Infinity Ward confirmed that it would not provide dedicated servers for MW2, using its IW.net system for matchmaking, last month. It wasn't a popular decision, attracting upwards of 180,000 gamers to sign a petition against the move. The company responded that it is prioritising "fans" over "the modders and the tuners".

Carmack, unsurprisingly, reckons Rage is looking good. "Doom 4 is obviously a bit further out”, he added.

Can anyone hear that sound? It's the sound of developers ringing the death bell of PC gaming.

This trend seems to be catching, and while I don't play on my PC like I used to, I can totally understand why PC gamers would be pissed about it. I'm sure if many console games had the same server options, plenty of games would still have an audience.

With the servers for Chrome Hounds being shut down in January 09, there's nothing worse than buyng an online game, and getting no online play, old game or not. Perhaps many MMOs might also not go the same deathly way too, if you could host you own game with a corporate server on PC.

Why is modding and tuning such a problem for them? Its been staple stuff for many PC games for years

I still think, that this is a corporate decision, more than a technical and cost one, designed to screw gamers that mod, because modding is obviously means you are a pirate. Technical PC people know the difference, but corporate suits do not, and if they do, ignore the difference.

If your sales are low, don't get butt hurt about it, id and IW.
