IGN-owned download-only retailer Direct2Drive, along with fellow online retailers Impulse and GamersGate, have stated that it will not be selling
Modern Warfare 2 for PC. It turns out that they don't like the mandatory installation of third-party software with the game - especially when that software is tied to a rival retail platform - Steam.
A statement on Direct2Drive's
website tells us, "At Direct2Drive, we believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn't be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased. Because
COD MW 2 requires you, the consumer, to do that, we aren't able to offer the game via Direct2Drive at this time."
A representative from the site was a little nastier, talking to
Kotaku, saying, "We don’t believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse."
Impulse, however, had the stones to just
come right out and say what Direct2Drive danced around - "The most obvious issue is the forced inclusion of a competitor's store that blocks us from carrying the game." Thanks, guys.
Gamersgate has stated that it will not carry
Modern Warfare 2 for the same reasons.
Steamworks, the software in question, is used for things like installation and DRM in
MW2.
So, Direct2Drive, Impulse and Gamersgate customers, which competing retailer will you be running into the arms of so you can get hold of
MW2?
