Nintendo's New DS is XL for Europe

Rather than DS Ill...

Posted by Staff
"Nintendo today confirms that a new Nintendo DSi XL console is launching in Europe in the first quarter of 2010. The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi. Further details will be released soon."

Thank goodness for that. In Japan it's called the DSiLL, which given recent financials from the company would have given rise to all sorts of silly comments... like that one.

Details of the Japanese model are here.

It releases in Japan on November 21 with a 4.2 inch display and a ¥20,000 (£134) price tag. It comes with a 129.3mm 'touch pen' compared to the 96mm stylus.

As for Europe, "The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi. Further details will be released soon."

When will they stop doing this? I'm not buying 4 or more DSs for incremental changes. And I'm more likely to paint my own Wii black than buy a black Wii, which is quite unlikely.

I'm not getting a PSP Go, either - why would I buy another PSP that doesn't have a UMD drive, when I already have one that does. That's even more silly than expecting me to buy a second and third PSP, just because they made them shinier and 4mm thinner.

I'm either going to wait for a proper successor, or I'm going to go with the analysts' opinion and instead of spending £200 on the same console I've already bought, get an iPhone or iPod Touch, or something. In fact, I could just get quite a few books, or maybe some Lego instead, for a truly innovative experience.

Wow! So Nintendo have personally gotten in touch with you and told you that you have to go and buy this new variant, have they? You must feel so privileged!

Or, as is more likely, this version is aimed at older people, with poor eyesight, who have made consistent comments to Nintendo that they have trouble seeing what's written on the small screens of the normal DS/DSi?

They made my DS obsolete, trying to pressurise me into buying a new one, by including features that mine doesn't support (camera, DSi ware, WPA2, etc). I would liked to have used my DS online more, but I'm not paying an additional £150 just for those extra features.

It's not all about money - I was loyal to them by buying a DS - they should be loyal to me in return by actually supporting it, as opposed to making my DS obsolete 3 times in one generation. In other words, they should have allowed the original DS to use WPA2 and DSi ware, but they assumed I'd be okay with buying a new DS.

I find it amusing that handhelds cost nearly as much as games consoles...The PSPGo isn't that far off in price to the PS3 and costs more than an Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite makes no sense.
