Blames Yen and price cutting

Nintendo's Depressed Financials Bring Realism
As expected Nintendo's latest set of financials reflect a dour economic environment and could also suggest that the world has enough Wiis for now.

The company says, "Sales and income during this six-month period (to September 2009) were adversely affected by appreciation of the yen and the price cut on 'Wii' hardware."

The facts are that during the period for the company's video games areas net sales "were 548.0 billion yen (34.5% down from the six-month period ended September 2008), operating income was 104.3 billion yen (58.6% down from the same period a year ago), ordinary income was 1106 billion yen (53.4% down from the same period last year) and net income was 69.4 billion yen (52.0% down from the same period last year)..."

In terms of hardware, the DS range sold 11.7 million units worldwide in the six months to September, compared to 13.7 million in the same period last year. The Wii sold 5.75 million worldwide in the period this year compared to 10.10 million last year.

The DS is probably getting to the point now where everyone who wanted one has bought one.

The Wii on the other hand....
I was looking at the Wii and wondering if it was worth buying.
Found myself looking up various sites and making a mental list of games that I'd like to play.
There are a few and a couple are games from previous generations that were never released in the UK.
I'm finding that list to be really hard. (A new console to play old games, greaaat!)

I hate the Wii ...so far. I think it is Nintendo's worst console ever and all because I feel they've abandoned their core audience.
All these stupid jump up and down party games marketed and sold to non gamers.
There comes a point when they lose interest... because they aren't really gamers.
What then?

The DS came along and offered new types of games and new ways of playing and it's great. I feel that it delivered on it's promise and got beyond the tacked on novelty factor of the early days.
The Wii on the other hand is just a massive missed opportunity. It could be the greatest thing ever but for the time being, it isn't.
