Turn 10: Gran Turismo Not Modern Like Forza
With Forza Motorsport 3 hitting store shelves this week, it makes sense for folk to be talking to Turn 10 about its latest work. Major Nelson did just that in his latest podcast, speaking to the developer about the challenges and specifics of Forza 3 development.

But it wasn't long before the focus turned to Gran Turismo 5, its well-known rival in the racing simulator field. Game director Dan Greenawalt was asked by Major Nelson how he feels Forza stacks up against Polyphony Digital's series.

"Gran Turismo is a great game. It’s been a huge franchise, a huge part of many gamers kind of history of their gaming and I got a lot of respect for Kazunori Yamauchi and his whole team at Polyphony Digital”, begins Greenawalt, before dismissing comparisons with GT5: Prologue for the fact that it's not a full game. He then compares the work ethic of Turn 10 and Polyphony, stating that their 'modern' approach is something the GT creators just don't have.

“What I do know is that I think our visions, the vision of Kazunori and the vision that I have... are very similar. The execution is very different, we’ve got this commitment to this modern game design having the most cutting-edge physics, embracing UGC, embracing community, that I don’t think it is part of his vision, and it’s not meaning he’s lacking or not, it just means there’s a difference."

Meow. Forza Motorsport 3 hits store shelves this Friday.

I'd have to agree with Turn 10. Gran Turismo is cool, always has been, but Polyphony have been caught sleeping and have been lapped by Forza. I personally fell out of the GT passenger seat after GT2, because of some awful not fun choices that were made in that game, Since then I left sims, for the streets of Burnout, which never disappoints. It took Forza 2 to get me to return to sims.

While Polyphony brag a huge selection of cars, these kinds of driving games are now being defined by Forza. This is less about car count, while treading the line of racing sim and fun.

Best thing for ever one, play both games and decide for yourself. I'm sure anyone that plays Forza 3, will see a lot of forward thinking that GT has been crying out for, but still fails to get, while I'm sure it will be good. Some of the Polyphony team checking out Forza 3 at E3, shows that rivalry is a good positive thing.

I can't see that , unless they have improved GT MASSIVELY from GT5 Prologue. I have never loved Forza before, but Forza 3 is everything I wanted GT5 Prologue to be... and it wasn't.

I have been a huge GT fan, but GT5P was just uninvolving...

I think what's really going to be interesting is the Famitsu score for Forza 3. Even in Japan, GT has a firm foothold, but I hope Forza steals the crown. With GT5 months away still, I think Polyphony needs a reality check. Three years is far too long to have GT in development.

The less said about the PSP Go version the better.
