The spirit of flight sim studio ACES lives on, as former veterans of the closed Microsoft developer have founded Cascade Game Foundry, and today announced its plans to create a portfolio of simulation games.
Creative Director Rick Selby and Managing Director Kathie Flood both have a long history leading the Microsoft ACES Studio and are looking to put that experience to "address the significant hole in the simulation market left by Microsoft's recent departure". No love lost between the two companies then.
ACES was best known for its Microsoft Flight, Combat Flight and Train Simulator series. It was closed along with fellow PC developer Ensemble Studios in January 2009 when Microsoft went through a rigorous job cutting process, aiming to restructure their Game Studios label.
"Our previous efforts focused on building traditional simulation titles. However, now we get to redefine what a simulation game can be. as a designer, that is incredibly liberating," said Selby, hinting that on top of previous hardcore sim titles, Cascade could look towards more casual experiences.
Flood explains a bit more about the new studio's focus, speaking of experiences beyond flying and railroading. "Think of SCUBA diving off Hawaii, traversing the Andes, hiking the Great Wall of China... the possibilities are endless."
Cascade Game Foundry is reportedly working on the design and demo for its first project, as yet unannounced.
