Polyphony Studio head Kazunori Yamauchi has told Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that
Gran Turismo 5 is - finally - nearing completion. But, ever the perfectionist, he seems to want to put more things in the racing simulation even at this late stage.
"All the basic stuff is complete, but we're trying to give everything that little bit extra at present," Yamauchi said, before attempting to frustrate eager fans some more by adding "We could release it any time we want, really, but I want to have that classic
GT-style 'did we really have to go this far?' feel going. I want to go way beyond gamer expectations."
Could Polyphony be feeling the pressure from the incoming threat of
Forza 3? Perhaps, although the studio is well known for taking their sweet ass time with their
Gran Turismo instalments, so it could just all be business as usual.
The Famitsu interview, relayed by
1UP, also touches on the ability to bring your collection of cars from
Gran Turismo on PSP onto
GT5, Yamauchi's recent win on Germany's Nürburgring and the developer's deep respect for the American auto industry. "American cars are just amazing, no doubt about it... it's like [they] were designed with the heart of a boy looking forward into the future. If that history wound up getting snuffed out [with the recession], I think that'd be terrible."
Gran Turismo 5 is still on course for a Spring 2010 release date. Fingers crossed.
