American Gamers Only Care about Graphics Grunt

Green gaming not for the States.

American Gamers Only Care about Graphics Grunt
Alex Neuse of developer Gaijin Games (BIT.TRIP BEAT) has told SPOnG that going digital was more ecological than anything else, planning to do their bit for the environment. He's also commented on how digital-only has not become a big thing in the United States, and it's the fault of gamers.

"European developers have really jumped on board with this, and it hasn’t really happened in America because a lot of gamers there are only concerned about whether a game ‘pushes the limit’ in terms of processing and graphics. Which is sad because I feel a great game is a great game and doesn’t necessarily need to be flashy."

I disagree, since I am a gamer who loves gameplay above graphics (even though Wolfenstein might have good graphics, I hate it because the gameplay sucks). I know that there are some gamers who truly do like looks over controls, but please don't just assume we all are like that.

He didn't say ALL americans he said a lot of americans which means most of them.
Sure there are people like you who look at gameplay first but you are not the majority there...

I think the author is drawing conclusions based on limited knowledge of the real American gamer. Yes, American gamers make alot out of graphics. I think a person who spends $500 or more on a console expects for devs to use it to its full capabilities.

If graphics don't matter then why don't gamers stick with last gen consoles? I want gameplay and graphics. I can name plenty of games this gen that have released with both. I don't see why you would want gamers to settle for less.

I agree. Too many Americans want graphics before anything else. I am a retailer and I have watched hundreds, no probably thousands of people ask "How are the Graphics?" then turn it down because it doesn't look absolutely stunning and ignore the game play. Happened way too often with Final Fantasy X, too many people (self-proclaimed RPG Fanatics) say they hated the way the game looked and wouldn't play it. I could keep going but you get that I agree with this article.

what a bunch of nonsense. instead of making up stereotypes, lets use our brains and some research.
In the US
biggest PC games are WOW and the Sims
Biggest X360 games are Halo3 and CoD4
Biggest PS3 games are CoD4 and GTA4
biggest Wii games are Wii Sports Wii Play Wii Fit and Mario Kart

and the best selling current gen games console is . . . Nintendo DS

All of those above games are known for outstanding gameplay, and none of those games are on the newest greatest tech pushing engines. CoD4 and Halo 3 arent even HD (600p and 640p respectively)
The whole point of the NDS is that gameplay is more important than graphics
The whole point of the Wii is that gameplay is more important than graphics
yet these consoles are in 1st and 2nd place in the US respectively.
Haha, the highest def game on this list is WoW!

unfortunately none of this will convince any of you who think this, because every bit of this was already common knowledge. you probably just enjoy thinking of americans as dull witted slobs (grunt).

@triclops41
actually they are hd...low resolution but none the less still hd. more den 525 lines is considered hd. why? because thats all the lines they managed 2 get out of vacuum tube tvs back in the days due 2 limitations. soo actually those games are above 525 lines of resolution so it will b considered hd

now that statement would b true if u were talkin bout lets say france..hd starts above 819 lines of resolution.. hmmmm

Though I am an American gamer, game play has always been more important to me than graphics, though good graphics with good game play is always nice. However, no matter how pretty a game is, if the game play stinks, I won’t like it. Still I do hate digital distribution because I like having a hard copy of the game. There just something very nice about opening the shrink wrap for the first time, having a printed int. book to read, displaying on a shelf and above all else, knowing that years down the line I can dig out my old games and play them again.

I have to agree with Gaijin Games. I think this kind of attitude migrated from staunch PC owners, over to consoles when console graphics reached a certain point. Now that consoles are near on par in graphics, much of that elitism has gone, as gamers concentrate on more important aspects like multiplayer co-op, achievements etc.

Look at great recent games that were excellent despite their graphics. No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki, and Okami spring to mind. All superb games that chose style and substance to enhance the gameplay, over cutting edge graphics, yet no one purchased enough of them to make it worthwhile for the devs. Many gamers won't even play Wii because of how its the graphics look and it not being HD. I have a friend who has this same attitude.

Digital Distribution is a great thing for small developers, and a great dangerous mallet in the hands of larger devs and pubs, if not handle fairly and with care. I still think we are going to see more of the latter.

I love gameplay and story over ANY thing else in a game, ANYTHING, but I'm not going to lie, if a game goes for a realistic look, and me knowing what the hardware is capable of, I feel they should make it look polished and beautiful, on the other hand, if they want to go for a unique style, that works for me too, I love cel shading and Okami and Valkiria Chronicles are good examples of unique design done right. But like I said before, if you try to have a realistic tone for the game, then make it look real, I don't need anything flashy, just a level of polish that I have come to associate with AAA games, it might not be a game breaker, but it does take away from the over all experience. And another thing, think of a game that was HUGE and wasn't on the cutting edge graphics wise, either with realism or a unique design.
