Rumours abound that id Software is set to outsource development of the next instalment of the wildly popular shooter Quake.
Though nothing has been confirmed by the unusually secretive id team, the rumour stems from alleged in-fighting at the id head office.
Trouble began at id when acclaimed 3D modeller Paul Steed was sacked, and series innovator and industry legend Jon Carmack threatened to leave the company.
Then it was announced that development of Doom 3 had been confirmed, much to the displeasure of the Quake team, headed up by Carmack. It was at this time that nothing further was heard of Quake 4.
Whatever happens, QuakeCon, the annual event run by id to showcase its latest offerings, will take place on August 10 in Mesquite in Texas and promises several new id games. It seems you will have to wait and see.
