The PS3's Firmware 3.0? Pah! Insignificant. Pathetic as the PSP mocks the PS3's lowly system version, mightily, from atop a tall tower perhaps. For Sony's handheld, it's all about Firmware 6.00, which the American PlayStation Blog has just announced today.
Being such a rounded number, there's bound to be all sorts of crazy new stuff involved right? Well, er... you get new theme colours, beefed up security on the system... and the 'Network Update' option has been renamed to 'System Update'.
Okay, so the features are lean, but perhaps there's more going on underneath than at first glance? The PSPgo is just around the corner, so are there more behind-the-scenes improvements and tweaks to prepare for this?
It seems odd at least that in Europe we've not even had v5.55 available via Network (sorry
System) Update yet - the only way you can install this firmware so far is with a copy of a new game such as Final Fantasy Dissidia. Firmware 6.00 may even leapfrog 5.55 at this news.
Here is the feature list in full, from
Sony's PS.Blog:
* For those of you looking to customize your XMB (XrossMediaBar), a few new colors will be added under the Theme Settings. These new theme colors can be used on PSP models 2000 or after (PSP-2000, 3000 and N1000).* A security patch has been added.* [Network Update] has been renamed as [System Update].
