Capcom of Japan have announced that it will be releasing the highly anticipated fighter, Capcom Vs SNK 2, for both PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast in Japan, on the 13th of September this year.
The game, one of the biggest crowd pullers at this year’s E3, had previously only been confirmed for release on PlayStation 2, though it would appear that Capcom’s undying support for Sega hardware and the hardcore gaming installed user-base of the Dreamcast has won through.
This news also bolsters the chances of seeing this accomplished fighter hitting our shores before the end of the year. This type of game will need very little localisation, and Capcom have always strived to serve the European and American gamer with the shortest possible delays.
It is also good news for all you Dreamcast owners out there. After a series of high-profile cancellations and cannings, it comes as a welcome break to see a game being released for the machine, a game that was previously thought of as a PlayStation 2 exclusive.
There is one worrying factor though. A Capcom spokesman today said that although the Dreamcast version was in production, publication might be a different story. “Yes, the Dreamcast version is being produced but Capcom Europe will not be publishing it. The game can easily be released in Europe but we will need to find a publisher for it. We have no interest in publishing the Dreamcast version, though we will be publishing the PlayStation 2 version of the game.”
We will bring you more news as we get it.
