Eidos Interactive has released several new screens of its gunship helicopter battle game Thunderstrike: Operation Phoenix for the PlayStation 2, from Tomb Raider developer Core Design.
Eidos describe the game thusly: “A deadly wave of extremist terrorism has struck at all the principal nations, paralysing the world with fear. The globe’s major powers immediately issue a state of emergency, merging their weapons resources and technologies into a clandestine project entitled Operation Phoenix.
In control of the most advanced Gun-Ship technology known to man, you’re the best shot the free world has for peace. Your objective is clear: Resolve All Situations.”
Ooh the excitement! One question remains though: Will it be better than Airwolf on the Commodore 64? We doubt it! ;-)
In all seriousness, Thunderstrike is looking like an accomplished air combat game, featuring all kinds of military muscle to get your teeth into.
The gameplay has been quoted as being more akin to an arcade than a simulator. You have the option to customise your chopper to ensure that you have the right tools for the job in hand. Hell-Fire missiles, Shockwave bombs and chainguns can all be added, depending on what you have to do in each mission. It usually involves blowing things up, so you shouldn’t go far wrong.
Combined with the many varied gaming environments, (Alaska, Panama, Africa and the Middle East etc) is a wealth of gameplay options. Core is set to incorporate a multiplayer system that, as well as the usual ‘trying to kill each other’ mode, also takes advantage of the much underused co-operative game system.
Thunderstrike: Operation Phoenix is due out in September this year.
