Tri Ace: SEGA More Open to RPG Ideas than Square
Tri Ace director Takayuki Suguro has been showing off the team's new SEGA-published Japanese RPG, Resonance of Fate, a preview of which will be up shortly.

During the preview, Suguro-san explained why Tri Ace decided to do game with SEGA rather than traditional partner, Square Enix. First up SEGA’s rooting in the West is perhaps a better fit for Resonance of Fate than Square's.

But the other reason is apparently that SEGA is more receptive to new RPG ideas than Square. There's a shocker.

I'm not suprised at all, Segas best RPGs have always been more original then the Square Enix ones, Sure they make allot less RPGs then Square Enix but when they do make them there usually top notch and far more original. From Phantasy Star to Panzer Dragoon, Valkyria Chronicles, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Gardian Heroes, Shining Force 3, 7th Dragon and more.

Square like to stick to the tried and true formula and tend to milk their IPs to death, Sega seem to make RPGs that innovate and are more open to new ideas... Sometimes it pays off and others it doesn't but Valkyria Chornicles is probably the best JRPG this Gen...

square enix has gone right down in my book this gen,they have yet to make a good game! infinite undiscovery was rubbish and last remnant was crap to, even star ocean 4 was a load of garbage! there is a lot riding on final fantasy 13 and if it isnt good, then im never buying a square enix title again, they can rot in hell for all i care for f**king their fans around.

And whats with their so called multiplatform status????? where is infinite undiscovery/last remnant and SO4 on ps3? they are xbox exclusives, yeah right square you only said that you were a mutiplatform dev so that you could put final fantasy on xbox!

This is NOT a flame bait but;

I can definitely understand why Square would deny them the pleasure of working with them. i seriously doubt it's about Square not being open to new ideas, it's just that Tri Ace's games haven't been very good at all lately. Hell, one might say they've sucked ass xD I can very much see how Square wouldn't want to put their name on the same box as them. Come on, no one in their right mind can say that II, TLR & SO4 have been praised to the skies. And for good reasons I might add...

You do know that Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 are not really Square Enix games, right? They were developed by tri-Ace, the same company behind Resonance of Fate, which is now being published by Sega. So yeah, they are crappy games, but if you think that, you should also beware of Resonance of Fate...

Undiscovery and SO4 are in no way crappy, they have just some flaws that can be explained by a lack of time and resources (or sloppy voice acting in the case of SO4). IMO they are still the best JRPGs of this gen besides ToV, however small an achievement that may be.
Anyway, I am very optimistic about EoE. Every tri-ace game with a more serious and dark scenario was awesome so far (Valkyrie Profile series) and the combat was always great.

Square lost their way ages ago, so to judge Tri Ace's games harshly, also has to say something about Square's lack of quality control, if a title is going to carry their name. True, IU and SO4 had problems, but with Square as the bastions of jrpgs, they should have taken time out to aid Tri Ace.

Co-produced games are sometimes a recipe for disaster.

I agree that Sega's rpgs are more original than Square's though, it just more of a shame when they don't reach a wider audience and are usually restricted to a certain format. I honestly believe that if Valkyria was on PS3, 360 and PC, it would have done a lot better. It would have needed this more, because of Square's rpg dominance, and the fact Sega don't advertise and market their games well anymore.

The next Sega hit, will more than likely be Platinum Games Infinite Space, and Phantasy Star on DS.

That much is true, but a lot about a developer can change when they work with a different publisher. It could well be that Square Enix were suffocating Tri-Ace's creativity, and as a result the games may have suffered.

I've not played any Tri-Ace games in the past though so I'm just speaking hypothetically. I'll be keeping an eye on this game though to see if it's up to snuff. As far as I'm aware, the Valkyrie Profile series is quite good so I wouldn't exactly smack down Tri-Ace completely just yet. They had two iffy games.
