PS2 takes a massive step forward. Full details inside.

Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan is gearing up to launch the massively delayed PlayStation 2 hard drive to Japanese gamers. Launching on July 19th for 18,000 yen which equates to a little over one hundred quid.

The unit has a 40 GB capacity, far greater than the hard drive to come with the Xbox, which is a now measly sounding 8 GB. The unit also comes equipped with a broadband Ethernet adapter and a 56K modem. Not bad for the money eh?

Yesterday Sony announced the list of games that are confirmed to be compatible with the hardrive:

Final Fantasy X (Square, July 19)
Jade Cocoon 2 (Genki, August 30)
Beatmania II DX 5th Style: New Songs Collection (Konami, August 30)
Guitadora: Guitar Freaks 4th Mix & Drum Mania 3rd Mix (Konami, September 20)
Capcom Vs SNK: Millionaire Fighting 2001 (Capcom, September)
Atelier Lilie (Gust, Released)
A-Train 2001 (ArtDink, Released)
All release dates are for Japan

Making Final Fantasy HD compatible is a shrewd move by Sony and Square. This also goes some way towards dispelling the rumours that the two companies have been clashing over Square’s development ambitions.

SquareSoft has been flirting with the idea of developing for other home consoles and rumour has it that this did not go down at all well with the men in charge at Sony.

We are also intrigued by the connectivity and possible storage applications for Capcom Vs SNK 2. Could this mean downloadable characters from other fighting series? Probably, and that, you must agree, will be icebox, dude!

Sony also revealed that production of the first phase of PlayStation 2 USB keyboards and mice is complete. Both are expected to launch in September, though whether they will make it onto European shelves at this time remains to be seen.
