Max Clifford Pimped Grand Theft Auto to Politicians
David Jones, had a life before Real Time Worlds... part of that life included creating Lemmings and being in at the start of the Grand Theft Auto series of rather nicely selling games. Speaking at Develop he has provided some insight into just how the original game got so big, so fast. It comes down to notorious PR man, Max Clifford.

Adam Hartley quotes Mr Jones as follows "Oh the controversy aspect [of GTA] was completely built-up.

"It was used as marketing for the game. We employed Max Clifford who, once he saw the game, was a little bit disappointed [with its cartoony style]. So he just never let us show the game."

"He told us that he would just tell the politicians all about it without showing it.

"And, to his exact word, we were on GMTV within one week. One hour of prime-time television talking about the game. Just as he had said!"

Who would have guessed that politicians would have bitten so easily without even having seen the game?

And who would have thought that this single action of greed by one company would fuel a hate campaign against the games industry for so long.

Thanks Rockstar.
