It has emerged that there is a serious shortage of development kits for Nintendo’s upcoming GameCube console. Worst affected are the hordes of third party developers that have yet to secure a publishing deal for their GameCube projects.
Nintendo has issued a statement to developers that reads thus: “The response from developers and publishers at E3 has been tremendous. As we expected, the demand for dev kits has again exceeded our supply. The dev kit situation will improve in the next couple months, however we're very reluctant to make any commitments as to a specific date. We are currently allocating GameCube dev kits through our publishers. If you've already got a deal with a publisher, please send us information regarding the game title, schedule, and publisher contact. We will confirm this information with them, and allocate dev kits through the publisher. This process can happen relatively quickly. If you don't have a publisher deal, we ask for your patience. If you can sign a GameCube contract with a publisher, we will grant the GameCube authorisation in order to complete the deal. We cannot grant the authorisation before a signed deal is in place.”
This causes a serious problem to developers. Apart from having to begin projects without the necessary tools for the job, it will be nigh on impossible to convince a publisher to take on a game that is not being developed on the correct hardware.
