Sony: Motion Control "Essential" to PS3

Motion-sensing peripherals have now arrived, apparently

Andrew House, recently appointed president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, sees motion control as "essential" to the PS3's 10 year life cycle.

"That's one of the essentials", House said of the PS3 wand controller. He was also, of course, quick to expound the virtues of the PS3's Blu-ray player as a feature that adds to the console's lifespan.

As for the timing of the appearance of Sony's wand House reckons, "We have have a lot of confidence from a Sony stand point on the right time to introduce new technology and new interfaces, and the goal of the company has always been to do it at the right time, when we can make a difference and be best of breed." Let's hope Sony provides more support for its latest motion control interface more than it does for its somewhat abortive Sixaxis.

House also had a dig at Nintendo when he talked about the 'stunning' accuracy of Sony's wand and said, "That sounds like an incremental step in terms of motion technology, but it's a huge one in terms of saying 'now it's arrived' and it's really going to change the way we think about how we play games."

Someone should point out to Nintendo that motion control just arrived...

Is the right time, after Microsoft, after sales drop off?
