UMD inches ever-closer to death

Capcom Bypasses UMD on PSP Release
Hot on the heels of further rumours about a UMD-less PSP, Capcom has confirmed that it will bypass Sony's disc format for the upcoming European release of its anime beat-'em-up, Fate/Unlimited Codes.

Capcom says that this doesn't mean it has abandoned UMD, however. “We certainly do not intend to stop supporting UMD”, a rep told MCV. “Certainly for us PSP is very important – more so with Monster Hunter coming – than maybe any other publisher.”

The move will mirror the game's US release.

This comes as a new rumour suggests that a new PSP, with no UMD support and a sliding screen, will be announced at E3.

The Capcom news also comes not long after confirmation from Sony that it won't release Patapon 2 on UMD in America.

Another death knell for UMD? Sounds a bit like it, doesn't it?

i wonder how many people this will affect in regards to not having a required connection to download games?

i say this as i went in Gamestation recently and two lads came in asking about Xbox live when it was explained they needed a broadband connection they were quite disappointed as they said they didn't have one, which made me wonder how many people have games consoles portable or home yet do not have a internet connection?

and are Sony and by this Capcom excluding certain markets? esp in country's where broadband penetration isn't as wide spread in ours, are Sony and MS and NInty for that matter to concerned with 1st world countries?, do they neglect the markets with the largest populations yet the smallest tech bases and amounts of revenue?

obviously no one can comment here about it on a personal level or else they would have the require connection?

cool but not cool as haritori stated how many people do not have broadband or can not get it (if i go over to my fathers home broadband is not available he can only get dialup or internet by satellite. then there is the other point and ok so it dose not hit the usa or japan but dose the uk playstaion network cards were are they how many psn account holders do not have a credit/deit card and would only be able to buy off the ps store with a prepay card just have a look at many other forums and theres loads of post stating when is the uk getting them hey if sony were clever thay would have it so thay you could go into a shop that has pay ponit/etopup like that of phones/gas/electric and so on easy and would be cheap to do make it so that you buy your fist topup as a £20 card that you load on to your account with links that card to your account no throwaway = better on the environment

Haritori, this is exactly why a completely DLC future won't work. This Fate Unlimited game can easily be imported, but I admire Capcom trying this out all the same, like Sony. Fortune favours the brave.

I'm sure there are many gamers out there, that would love to play on Xbox Live, but can't because of no broadband access. I just wish MS would show us the numbers of offline gamers in comparison.

In a perfect world, we'd all plug into their Matrix for fun, with no piracy, fixed game prices etc. The world is far from perfect though. I'd have having to navigate PSN store.
