EU blog ahoy

Sony Semi Independent Blog Loses Semi
Sony PlayStation's 'semi-independent' European blog, Threespeech, has finally given up the ghost and is to be folded into a EU blog. This will mirror the US blog that has been press releasing about European PlayStation info for some time anyway.

Threespeech used to say this about itself:

"It is semi official, an informal means of communication for PlayStation. Importantly, we avoid censoring content here, so long as Three Speech is used constructively. We hope to create an environment that is balanced, open minded and intelligent, and that avoids the routine of fanboy warfare.."

Now, in a short statement, we're told, "As of April the 17th Three Speech will be bowing out to make way for a brand new and shiny EU PlayStation blog."

Well, at least we can all stop wondering about exactly what 'semi-independent' is actually supposed to mean and put that phrase into storage along with 'really unique', 'pure genius' and 'literally true'.

Fair comment on 'really unique" unique is simply not scalable, something is either unique, or it is not. No unique thing is quite unique, or really unique. No unique thing is more unique than another.

But pure genius is simply a term for a flash of purely cerebral inspiration - rather than a product of trial and luck, effort and work. It's nowhere near as loathsome as "very unique".

Literally true is reserved almost solely for the discussion of religious texts. Superstitious people have painted themselves into a corner. They have spent hundreds of years saying things that are patently untrue are true, with the exceptions of the Scientologists who have spent tens of years trying to pretend to non-believers that they don't secretly believe things that are pure science fiction. When called to account by scientific empiricism, these religions have to imply that there texts are some way truthful in another, non-literal, spiritual way. They say, and I am quoting the Atma-Yogi directly here "Science and the scientific method do not apply to this material."

As a term, it is not an oxymoron, there is truth other than literal truth. A tortoise never did force a leopard to change its spots in a race. But there is still "truth" in fables.

And while Threespeach was alway a ridiculous little corporate toadying box, there is validity in semi-independant.

Imagine a blog where I provide the hosting,, the office space etc. That could never be considered independant. But if I allowed the staff to say whatever they liked, it would certainly be semi-independant.

If the staff then hopelessly and pathetically toed the corporate line for fear of losing their jobs if they did anything else, that would be Threespeach.
