Acer to Introduce Wii Clone

PC maker Acer is, according to Turkish website Donanim Haber teaming up with Nvidia and Intel to produce a Wii-like PC.

The 'Acer Hornet' has apparently been leaked in images (such as the rather tacked together one you can see to the right). According to a translation on Tom's Guide, "the device harnesses the power of Intel's Atom chip and Nvidia's Ion chipset with an HDMI output and visuals capable of 1080p playback. Apparently, the device will be capable of playing PC games, but due to the Ion limitations (16 stream processors), the resolutions may be limited as well. Selling for a 'couple hundreds of dollars', the Hornet uses full-size peripherals and works silently."

The Inquirer adds more meat to the bones, stating, "Sources close to one of the firms confirmed to the INQ that the device will launch in the first week of April and that it's the first Ion design win for Nvidia.

"'There are 3-4 SKUs', noted our source, adding it would be priced between $199 to $399 and be a 'Full PC... with a Wii-like size'.

As you can see from the image to the right, the give-away would appear to be the controller that comes with the Hornet. Its resemblance to the Wii Remote is startling. You will apparently be able to use this to control games as well as standard PC functions.

One other thing really stands out about this story, however. Acer has not commented one way or the other. Now, if the product really is due to come out in the first week of next month, you would expect the company behind it to be extolling its virtues rather than remaining silent.

Also, the idea of flapping a Wii Remote around in order to create a spreadsheet strikes us as insanely pointless. So, we're putting this into the "believe it when we see it" bin for now.
