Activision/Blizzard looks if it's not convinced that EA actually has the right to publish Double Fine's
Brutal Legend despite EA buying the rights to the one-time Sierra title.
When Electronic Arts
picked up the rights to
Brutal Legend in December following the Activision/Blizzard/Vivendi merger, David DeMartini (senior veep and GM, EA Partners) was excited. He said, "At EAP, we are deeply committed to giving the industry’s elite independent developers a platform to launch their creations to a worldwide audience."
It all sounded lovely.
But this is business where lunch is good and greed is for wimps...
Variety points out that "According to two sources familiar with ActiBlizzard’s position, the publisher believes that it was still in negotiations with Double Fine and that the EA deal is invalid."
Double Fine's position is that as Vivendi games no longer exists, DF retains the rights to the game it was developing. Acti/Blizz won't comment.
And unnamed EA spokesperson says, "We doubt that Activision would try to sue. That would be like a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy."
