Sony: PS3 is "On Track"

Even if "relatively" it's behind

Sony: PS3 is "On Track"
In the face of financial results showing declining PlayStation 3 sales for the third quarter year on year, Sony has stated that it is "on track" to meet its sales target for the end of the fiscal year.

"In terms of units, it is true that PS3, as compared to last year, is slightly worse, but on a full-year basis we believe we are on track to sell the 10 million units that I said at the beginning of the year", said Sony's executive VP and CFO, Nobuyuki Oneda, in an earnings call.

This is following the revelation that PS3 sales for the last quarter were at 4.46 million - down 440,000 from the same period last year.

Oneda did own up to the PS3's flagging efforts in the race against the Wii and Xbox 360, saying, "Relatively speaking, (compared to) the growth of other platforms, we are behind, but it's not the case that we are not meeting the target."

Sony might well be set to meet its internal targets but, even so, its shareholders can't be feeling too great about Microsoft being able to boast "a record 6 million units sold in the quarter" and Nintendo having sold 44.96 million Wiis worldwide while the best Sony can say is that it hasn't slipped on a target that leaves it in third place.

Sony is on track to making even bigger losses and selling their now new estimated figure of just 1,000 PS3's LOL!!!

Sorry couldnt resist, but given their at present situation spending 4million on adverts is ridiculous perhaps they should seriously think about putting the price down of the PS3 as thats what the consumer is truely waiting for and will definently boost sales but at the same time increase their losses but perhaps money could be made back from the games and the PSN network with the content.

I'm sure somewhere in Sony HQ there is an accountant with an Excel spreadsheet making that exact calculation on a daily basis. As soon as a hardware price cut is estimated to provoke enough of a spike in hardware sales to raise software sales by enough to cover the losses made on the hardware price drop, it'll happen.

Besides, if they spent that £4M advertising budget on price drops, it'd make no difference whatsoever. They want to sell tens of millions of the things, you're not going to get a £1 reduction in price out of £4M.

obvious agreement that a few million spent marketing wouldn't have translated into a price cut of any size.

What kinda info you got on attach rates on the three current non-portables, I know the 360's is claimed to be 8:1 and the highest of the three. Although I should think that the release of Resistance 2 should bump PS3's by a significant fraction.

The Wii is around 6:1 and catching up to the Xbox360's, PS3 is around 5:1 and also rising. ut that's based on NPD numbers though.
