In the face of financial results showing
declining PlayStation 3 sales for the third quarter year on year, Sony has stated that it is "on track" to meet its sales target for the end of the fiscal year.
"In terms of units, it is true that PS3, as compared to last year, is slightly worse, but on a full-year basis we believe we are on track to sell the 10 million units that I said at the beginning of the year", said Sony's executive VP and CFO, Nobuyuki Oneda, in an earnings call.
This is following the revelation that PS3 sales for the last quarter were at 4.46 million - down 440,000 from the same period last year.
Oneda did own up to the PS3's flagging efforts in the race against the Wii and Xbox 360, saying, "Relatively speaking, (compared to) the growth of other platforms, we are behind, but it's not the case that we are not meeting the target."
Sony might well be set to meet its internal targets but, even so, its shareholders can't be feeling too great about
Microsoft being able to boast "a record 6 million units sold in the quarter" and
Nintendo having sold 44.96 million Wiis worldwide while the best Sony can say is that it hasn't slipped on a target that leaves it in third place.
