Europe: Nintendo Wii Tops 14 Million
Nintendo has dished up some internal European sales figures for 2008, along with the installed base of its two games machines. Guess what? They're impressive! Record breaking on the sales front, in fact.

The DS first - 11.2 million units of the handheld were sold in 2008. That, Nintendo tells us, "is the largest ever annual sales of a gaming console in European history." The figure takes the DS's European installed base up to over 31 million.

Meanwhile, 8.3 million Wiis were sold. That's a 58% increase over 2007. It's also, according to Nintendo, "the largest annual sales of home consoles in European gaming history". Those sales put the Wii's European installed base at more than 14.2 million.

In typical corporo-style Laurent Fischer, MD of marketing and PR, Nintendo Europe, said, “The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives. This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe”.

True, but it would be nice to know what their definition of Europe is, and whether these are sold to retail or sold to consumers, and if sold to consumers whether they are Nintendo's own figures or from an independant sales tracker.
