Beware: 'CoD5' Beta Fakery!

Inaccurate spammers outed

Infinity Ward has warned that supposed invites to a beta for 'COD5' sent via e-mail are fakes.

In case you're already scratching your head at the mention of a beta for a game that's already out - 'COD5', which is part of the name of the e-mail's sender (COD5BETA@infinityward.com), is not supposed to refer to World at War, but rather to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Infinity Ward's community manager, fourzerotwo, tells us on his blog and the Infinity Ward forum, "there is a FAKE email going out to people which appears to come from COD5BETA@infinityward.com (see above).

"If you receive one, just delete it. Don’t open it, reply, or click any links - it’s fake and could contain a virus or be an attempt to phish personal information. The body of the email is an exact replica of the one I sent out during the COD4 Beta, except they’ve replaced all references of Call of Duty 4."

A little earlier, fourzerotwo had mentioned the fakes via twitter, but stated on his blog that the problem was more widespread than he thought, leading to the longer blog and forum postings.

You wouldn't need to be a rocket surgeon to work this out on your own, of course. Aside from the afore-mentioned error in the name of the sender, Modern Warfare 2 isn't expected out until Autumn. It's a bit early for a beta.

Just to clarify, however, fourzerotwo states, "For the record, there is no beta. Believe me, if we were having a beta, I’d be screaming it from every internet rooftop from Twitter to Forums. We have yet to even officially announce our next project, let alone a beta for it."

As he points out, however, you have to flattered by the fact spammers see your game franchise as enticing enough to draw the same sort of clicks as 'Let your snake enter her garden'...
