Following a bluster and general outpouring of grief from the Internet community that the Wii Speak peripheral (used in
Animal Crossing City Folk) was effectively barred from resale - Nintendo has volte faced. This was revealed due to the wording in pamphlet that came with the aforementioned animal-based game. The wording referred to the code required to use the Wii Speak channel. According to Nintendo at the time, that code, "cannot be replaced by Nintendo or your retailer if it is lost or stolen."
This meant that once the code was used, that was it - you couldn't sell or swap your game and peripheral. All sorts of forum-based fireworks and editorialised cannonades were loosed regarding freedom of selling things.
We contacted Nintendo at the time and were told that things were 'complicated'. We've now been sent an official statement that appears to over-ride the detail within the pamphlet. It reads:
"Nintendo can confirm that when consumers purchase the Wii Speak accessory, they are provided with a Wii Download Ticket with a unique number. The ticket, which can be redeemed via the Wii Shop Channel, will enable the user to download the Wii Speak Channel free of charge to a single Wii console.
Any consumer who may have misplaced their Wii Download Ticket number for the Wii Speak Channel or require a new number following a Wii exchange may contact their local Nintendo Customer Services department, where they can request a replacement Wii Download Ticket number."
So, Nintendo has either responded to popular demand or has caved into the the screeching mob depending on what kind of a fanboy you decide you'd like to be.
Either way, you can now flog or swap your Wii Speak peripheral.
