It's a bit of a bumper period in the UK All Formats Chart for Activision Blizzard this week. The publisher has beaten itself to the top spot, with
Call of Duty: World at War knocking back
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.
Not only has
CoD: World at War (
reviewed here) grabbed the top spot, it's also become the third fastest selling game of all time in the UK, pulling up behind
GTA IV and
GTA: San Andreas.
Call of Duty 4 for the PS3, 360 and PC launched in the same week last year. That also got to Number 1, but its launch week sales have been eclipsed by those of World at War on the same formats by a ratio of two to one.
So it is that
Wrath of the Lich King sits at Number 2. That's managed to grab itself a title too, becoming the fastest-selling PC game in the UK ever. It beats
Championship Manager 4, which had held that honour since its March 2003 launch.
Rounding out Activision Blizzard's Top 10 presence is
Guitar Hero World Tour. The release of the full band packs has put that up from Number 17 last week to Number 6.
Adding to a strong week for PC game sales is SEGA's
Football Manager 2009, in at Number 3. While it's also on the PSP, it's fairly safe to call the PC the lead format. Just behind it at Number 4 is
Gears of War 2, which has slipped from Number 1 and dropped 64% of its sales. Behind that, Electronic Arts'
FIFA 09 has dropped three places to Number 5.
Nintendo still has a solid Top 10 presence thanks to
Professor Layton (DS) and
Mario Kart Wii, which are both down one place to Numbers 7 and 8 but up in terms of sales by 9% and 12% respectively.
Konami's
PES 2009 is still going strong at Number 9, while THQ's
WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 drops five places to Number 10.
While both Nintendo and EA are represented in the Top 10, it's not all good news for them.
Wii Music and
Mirror's Edge both fail to make an appearance up there, débuting at Numbers 16 and 20 respectively.
Perhaps even more disappointing is
LittleBigPlanet (
reviewed here) for Sony. Having seen a slightly lacklustre first week (given the hype) at Number 4, the game plummets to Number 19. Still, that's not as bad as
Shaun White Snowboarding's début for Ubisoft at Number 33...
Next week, watch for Eidos's
Tomb Raider Underworld; EA's
Rock Band 2 on the 360,
Left 4 Dead on PC and 360, and
Need for Speed Undercover; Midway's
Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe and
Lips from Microsoft.
