The PlayStation 2 is still kicking and screaming according to Nielsen Games' marketing manager Brad Raczka, who has explained, "The PS2 still has the highest overall usage for any individual console Nielsen measures due to its very large installed base."
With Xmas tide approaching, however, and Xbox 360s being
given away with cereal packets (that is an exaggeration for effect); with the Wii already credit-crunchingly inexpensive, 2009 could well see the decline and fall of PS2. On the other hand if you already have a PS2, why spend more money?
This truth emerged following a recent piece of Nielsen (it does the US TV ratings in case you weren't aware) research that also put paid to the ongoing - and apparently misplaced - criticism that Nintendo's Wii once bought is rarely used. Apparently it gets used five or six times a month for 50 minutes a time. Now, this is not every day for 22 hours per day as 'the hardcore' obviously use their machines. Nor is it once a day for an hour a day, as you would expect of people who assiduously work out with Wii Fit. That said, it's more than once a year near Xmas.
