Confirmed: LittleBigPlanet Delayed for Qur'an Reference
Sony has confirmed that LittleBigPlanet has been delayed due to references to the Qur'an found in its soundtrack.

The full statement from Sony reads as follows:

"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.

"We will confirm the new launch date shortly."

The song referred to is apparently Tapha Niang by Toumani Diabate's Symmetrical Orchestra. The phrases in question, flagged by a poster on the PlayStation Forum, run as follows: "1- In the 18th second: "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death').

"2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: "كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish')."

The new release date is thought to be November 14th, although as Sony's statement tells us, this is unconfirmed.

Can anyone, maybe a devout Muslim or maybe just someone with a really big brain and huge knowledge of everything, tell me what is offensive about the use of those terms?

And if the song is so offensive that it requires the game to be pulled, why is the song available for download from Amazon?

Is this not a bit of an overreaction by Sony? Are Muslims really bothered by this, and if so, why aren't they firebombing Amazon for selling the song?

The world would be a far nicer place without religon.

Verses form the Quran should not be used in something especially a video game, holy verses are not to be used for 'enjoyment' and is sinful as is the person above me who has chosen to use Allah as his username.

Islam is a strict religion yes many even including myself have not been 100% devout but gives no one the right to do what has been done.

Islam is the one religion above all other religions from what was Jewdism then Christianity then came Islam the final true religion.

'Final true religion'? FFS go shove it up your ass. Its political correctness gone mad! Manchester Cathedral gets put in Resistance and Sony offer an 'apology'. A couple of lines from the Qu'aran are in a song (sung by a Muslim, no less) and put in a game and suddenly its being recalled from retailers!

the idea that there is a god is just stupid, allah/god/muhammed/...etc is just a comfort blanket for weak minded fools who cant accept that when we die we die, that is it, the end. the world is governed by fools looking to appease the minds of idiots.

Did anyone actually tell them to remove the track?
I heard the guy who made it was muslim anyway, and I doubt if anyone would have really noticed to be honest if they had left it in and not said anything. All the removal and delay does, is cause more animosity towards Muslims, and make people more paranoid about offending them.

No one 'told' anybody.

I assume that Sony looked at its stockholders; looked at its nice city centre properties; looked at what happened to Salman Rushdie, and what is happening to Sherry Jones; had a quick look at the Danish cartoon riots and thought, "Hell, it's one song in one game. Is it really worth the hassle? Reviews have been strong, people will wait."

I don't think is is really in the same league as 'the satanic verses' or the danish cartoons, no one is attacking the prophet as was in all the above cases.
sure, sony dont want a reaction like those incidents caused, but this is probably an overreaction, a patch would have been fine.

Nor do I. But I'm not Sony.

Face it the only reason that Sony delayed it was because they were scared s**tless that they would be blown up, or have someone under their employ with a fatawa popped on their ass.

There is that. Or there is also the, "Blimey! Do you realise how big the market could be that we're alienating? It's one song, get rid. There's potentially angry stockholders out there!"

Chances of actually being all blowed up versus chances of share price slipping?

I suppose. I'm just so pissed off. Its just another thing that the Muslims click their fingers about and we all have to simply accept it, because of the fear element (whether fear about being killed or fear they are alienating people, or both). Manchester Cathedral was not pulled from Resistance. I'm sorry, but was that not offensive to Christians? I know Christians and I tell you, it was. But it wasn't pulled because Christians don't blow people up if they don't get their own way. Britain and America... we're alike. Its people are becoming foreigners in their own countries. And then people wonder why so many people hate Muslims?

Weeeeelll, that's also largely because Resistance was released in March and it took the CofE until June to complain about it. The initial complaint was also framed as one of copyright before a rapid change of heart to 'gun crime'.

Mmmm, well, Dr. Barnett Slepian might beg to differ, but can't. Timothy McVeigh was brain-addled by Christian Patriotism; the Ku Klux Klan aren't adverse to biblical quotations; then we've got the Serbian White Eagles, The Lord's Resistance Army in a number of African nations. Let's also not forget Dayton Lee Calaway and Clifford Peeples. And cripes, this whole "invading Iraq" thing following 11/9?

Erm... most Americans are foreigners in their country. As for Britain, well, I've got Irish on one side of my family and Cornish on the other. I don't actually know what a real British person is supposed to look like. And, without help from Indians, Africans, Poles, Canadians, Americans, Aussies, New Zealanders, Scots ... etc ... etc I imagine I'd be writing this in German anyway.

The my religion is better than yours (or 'ALL Muslims are insane terrorists' idea) is down to religious fundamentalists raving on about half-digested myths which assure them of some 'position' or 'respect' among the uneducated and/or lazy and or/scared.

Frankly, I am with Sony on this one: "It's a song. Get rid". In fact, I'd prefer no mention of religion in anything I have to have anything to do with. It's a brain-deadening, spirit-crushing mishmash of fairy tale and political bullying mixed with the bloody obvious ("Dont' steal stuff", "Don't eat shelfish while travelling in the desert", "Don't eat meat that hasn't been bled properly"...)

That said, I did like Steve Earle's John Walker's Blues... and that contains a line from Sura 47, Verse 19, of the Koran - put to a country/blues vibe. I believe it's still on sale.

Cheers

I wasn't really referring to the COE, I was talking about Christians in general. When the COE did find out, Christians were offended that it was completely copied. No matter what way its tried to be spun, would ANY game have a shoot out in a Mosque, fictional or not?

I'm also not sure what you mean by invading Iraq. That was because of 9/11 and had nothing to do with Christianity. Had Muslims not hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center, the war would never have happened. Unless i've missed something. And as for your other points, I know that along history there have been Christian groups (or individuals) that have gone off the rails, but my point was simple. Does the world live in fear of Christians? Would Christians murder a Danish cartoonist for drawing a picture of Jesus in an insulting way? Would they murder the newspaper editor too for publishing it? Do Christians do things like hijack planes, blow up buses, train stations in Spain, etc?

As for America, well just because some can trace their family history back to places like Ireland, England, Italy or whatever doesn't really mean they are foreigners. And my point about being foreigners in our own countries was simple. I meant that immigrants are being put before ourselves. In Bolton Muslims get free driving lessons, yet British people don't. Notice how they also drive flash cars when their about 22? And the only reason they come over here instead of France, Spain, etc is because this country is a soft touch with benefits and such like.

dear, oh dear. 9/11 was not connected to Iraq in any way, though many people still state it was. Missing WMDs anyone? 45 minutes? Smoking gun as a mushroom cloud? How people forget.

Also, much of the terrorism in the world, particularly in the UK, including failed attempts, in every case, where videos have been made by the men involved, their reason for bombing is always made clear. The invasion of Muslim lands, primarily Iraq. Though Blair and the like were under the delusion that 'they are attacking our way of life', it's pretty clear to anyone that this is not the case. I think even bin laden made the argument against this 'why aren't we attacking sweden' or something like that.
Just look at this recent article from the Guardian, it's pretty obvious to anyone what the terrorists motivations are, but the reasons that are always stated by politicians are different (presumably for the 'if you repeat a lie often enough...' reason).

As for 'Muslims getting free driving lessons' and 'Muslims want to ban xmas' and 'Muslims do this', 'Muslims do that' barrage of headlines that we get, usually from the Mail and other trash in the newagents. There's a fairly clear agenda there. If you get so fed up with hearing all the stuff Muslims supposedly are doing to spoil our green and pleasant land, you'll probably care less about them when more of them are getting bombed abroad, or victimised/attacked by new laws at home.

Also, this new 'need' to establish 'Britishness', over the last couple of years, in the face of the 'threat' of Muslims asserting their identity, dressing differently etc. But really, there is no such thing as Britishness anymore. We were taken over by American culture a long time ago, which is now becoming the new global culture (another reason for these wars to spread 'democracy'). I'm rambling now, I'm off.
