Update: Responding to SPOnG's request for comment on this rumour, a Nintendo rep has said, "Nintendo has made no such announcement and will not comment on rumour and speculation."
It's Monday morning, so maybe your brain's still feeling a bit soft and ready for a fat, juicy rumour. According to the latest produce of the hardware rumour mill, a new DS is on the way. This one will, apparently, feature music playback and a camera.
It comes from Japanese newspaper, the
Nikkei, with a translation provided over on NeoGAF. According to said translation, the new DS will also feature a larger screen, an enhanced wireless connection and some kind of new functionality involving the exchange of data between the Wii and DS and an "SD card". Whether this means an SD card will be included is as unclear as the rest of the piece (you've got to assume that an SD card slot will be included though). Additionally, there's talk of games that will make use of the rumoured camera.
The device is said to be due in Japan before the end of the year for under ¥20,000 (£104, or €131). The DS currently retails at around ¥16,800 (£88, or €110) over there.
It's not been specified whether this supposed new DS is an upgrade to the current DS Lite (as the current version was to the original) or whether this will be the DS 2.
While a more multimedia DS would make sense in light of the success of devices like the iPhone, Nintendo has stuck to a no frills, game-centred approach for its handheld so far. Similarly, the Wii lacks the multimedia bells and whistles of the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It's uncertain Whether Nintendo would want to deviate from this approach by introducing a more expensive stock keeping unit (SKU) into the mix.
This isn't the only hardware update rumoured for the DS.
Late last month a report emerged suggesting that a dual touch screen DS will be announced in the new year.
