Warner Bros Gets Wanted

Will we see Angelina Jolie?

Posted by Staff
Warner Bros has announced that it will release a game based on Wanted, the crazy action blockbuster starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie.

The game will be a third-person action title, featuring signature moves from the film such as bending bullets and 'Assassin Time'. Okay, so maybe another game with a variation on bullet time isn't exactly the blast of fresh air the games industry needs, but SPOnG did spend much of our time watching McAvoy shoot enemies bullets out of the air thinking, 'we need a game of this'.

The game will pick up where the film left off. For the rest of this paragraph only: SPOILER WARNING! Quite what the fact that the game takes place after the film means for any possible inclusion of Angelina Jolie's character, Fox, we're not sure, given her status by the time the credits rolled. We would like to see her in it very, very much. SPOILER WARNING OVER.

The game will be developed by GRIN, which has worked on the Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series in the past.

Wanted will also bring Pete Wanat (executive producer on the game) back into collaboration with Universal Pictures' (which distributed the film) digital platform group. Wanat worked with the group on The Thing, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Scarface: The World is Yours.

The game has been in development since early 2007, meaning that Warner Bros plans to have it out later this year. The publisher is remaining vague on platforms, telling us Wanted will be out, “for consoles and personal computer”.

SPOnG is pleased to see this franchise making it to the gaming world, but we won't lie to you – we'd be more pleased if it was based directly on the original comics series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. The film ditched the 'supervillains secretly rule the world' aspect of the comic - which was pretty integral to the series – and that could have made for some pretty amazing gameplay. Still, the film had some rather awesome action sequences and our appendages are crossed for a similarly awesome game.

“The team at GRIN has a proven track record of creating action games that push the envelope in terms of gameplay and combat”, uttered Wanat. “With the Wanted video game, GRIN is creating entirely new gameplay mechanics and an experience that pulls no punches. Gamers and fans of the film alike will be blown away by the ability to curve bullets, pull off amazing combat sequences and literally conduct a symphony orchestra of action with the arsenal available to the most powerful assassins in the world.”

You can see the first screen from the game below.

Wanted is the worst film I've seen this year. A desperately-wanting-to-be-cool attempt at The Matrix, going as far as to rip off an entire scene at the opening, with Angelina Jolie failing to be sexy and Morgan Freeman failing to act. James McAvoy is also the action hero equivalent of a soggy flannel.

Best film I've seen all year. Effortlessly-managing-to-be-cool while avoiding all the up-its-own-arse pomposity and pseudo-religious whacko-spunk of the Matrix series. Instead it got right down to business: car chases, shooting people with bendy bullets and looking at Angelina's sweaty asscrack. Anyone with an ounce of testosterone would choose Angelina Jolie over Carrie Anne Moss all week long. And while James McAvoy may be the action hero equivalent of a soggy flannel, where Keeno is concerned I have just one word for you... Constantine.

Fittingly it's a word that throws the whole film not following the comic bag of worms WIDE open!

Then you need to see more films. Effortlessly? I think not. That film wanted to be loved more than a Big Brother evictee in an Essex nightclub. Bendy bullets? Cars flipping over? Everyone obeying their destinities given to them from a big weave? What a load of toss. The Matrix (and let's take the first one - the other two aren't up for discussion) succeeded because it was outrageous yet believable. Jolie's acting was atrocious and relied solely on her pouting, and she looked, basically, skeletal. At least Carrie Anne Moss gave a performance you could.. oh f**k it, that one's a losing argument.

Of course I'd go for Jolie over Moss on a physical level but this is a film we're talking about here. I'll go online if all I want is to have a wank. But Keanu went from being a loser geek to an action hero you could believe in, however the hell he did that with his limited acting range, and McAvoy at no point sells you the idea that he could give you anything more than a papercut.
