Sony has confirmed that the 80GB PS3, announced for North America earlier in the week, will be coming to Europe. This came from David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe at Sony's Europe-focussed E3 press conference.
The new version cost £299, the same as the 40GB version - and will be available from August 27th. Sony says that it will become the "mainstay of the company’s hardware line-up". Extra storage aside, the new model will be the same as the old one. No added backwards compatibility, then.
With a new PS3 over a month away at the same price as the 40GB model, you might expect the current version to come down in price so they can be sold through. It won't. Sony doesn't really want to talk about it, either. "The 80GB replaces the 40GB. Please do not ask me if we're going to go down in price for the 40GB because I will give you the answer, the answer is no", said Reeves†.
Why? Sony's been building towards this. "This has been planned by Kaz [Hirai] for months. There are very few 40GB models left - especially in UK. We predict we'll be out of stock by the time we launch", said Reeves. SPOnG has to wonder whether the company plans to sell fewer units through the rest of July and August than it would have done otherwise, because there seems to be little incentive to buy a 40GB PS3 with its 80GB counterpart just around the corner.
Sony also said that it will do various bundles for the PS2 and PSP. Further details were not given as these will vary between different SCEE territories.

Sony has f**ked up big time, not only have they lost Final Fantasy 13, Microsoft is beefing up the dashboard and services in Autumn and all Sony have got to compete with is a 40gb degradestation with a bigger hard drive...Wow just wow.

Well no I am not being a fanboy its facts the PS3 is a an utter s**t of a games console what can it do exactly in regards to play games? I mean look at all the cross platform games graphically they suck on the PS3 compared to the 360, I compared GTA 4 side by side on the PS3 and 360 and the PS3 was diabolical graphically!! slowdowns, colours were terrible and extremely dark even with all the settings on max for lighting.
Even the latest update for the PS3 f**ked up the consoles.
And where is HOME? Oh wait still WAITING for a f**king BETA!
Instead Microsoft announces a new revamp of the dash this year in Autumn!
Sorry but overall the PS3 is truely f**ked, 80gb version what with only a bigger hard drive?? No reduction in cost for the 40gb?? Degraded the console as well isntead Microsoft are improving the console.
Microsoft has the best software lineup and look on the system including live.
The only people that purchase a PS3 ONLY are deluded ignorant fanboys that dont know what true gaming is even if it hit them in the face.
There are tons more positive things to say about the 360 than the PS3.

Haven't we all seen this before, my friends please look back to the year 1995, A big hardware company on its third console, brings out some big black thing with the same controller as the last console, and it failed miserably.

why does always this competition between consoles affect people so much. you say youre not being a fanboy, but slagging off a console you dont own (yes yes i know you USED to) and championing one you do, is pretty much the definition of being a fanboy. if you dont like a console, great, dont have to f**king ram it down people's throats all the time.

A) Microsoft releasing a new dashboard isn't really that big a deal, is it?
B) 80GB vs 40GB is in fact an upgrade, however useless people might find it.
C) People who slag off consoles are fanboys, not people who buy them. Since fanboyism is probably the most hardcore-feature of "gaming", I prefer to be ignorant about it. Personally, I buy what I want, and play what I want.
D) If an XB360 fell on a PS3 it would merely bounce or slide off; if a PS3 fell on an XB360, it would crush it to smithereens.
E) The PS3, as far as I'm aware, hasn't lost Final Fantasy, only the exclusivity of it. As long as I can play it, I don't really care whether you can or not. What a "huge f**king shame" it is that people can either play it on the XB360 or PS3, according to their choice.

you never played a staturn than sega staturn controler just stits in your hand best for fighting games.
360 dashbord update it looks like a blended version of media center with the girly feel of the the wii
and hay the ps3 is better than the 360 and yes i haver the right to say it i own all 3 i have had my ps3 since lanch no problems
i have had many 360s even my elite has stoped working i not had it a year yet and it dose not f**king read dics if i wanted a console just for live arcade i have a pc ond get s**t loads of roms for mame that i can have in full sreen not borded and its all free

you are saying that you have two of the same hdtvs setup the same ( i dont think so ) even if you have two tvs the same wich i dout you dont own a ps3 any more so how have you done this i am very intrested
and yes thay have not put ps2 playback in it how cares if you are whanting to play your old ps2 games keep your ps2 simple if you have not got a ps2 go buy one seconhand you can pick up for about £40

People just face it the PS3 is infact a dead machine, old GPU outclassed by the 360's GPU, no upscaler and poor quality games coupled by tons of crap like the controller.

Tim has befriended the octupuses. He has them wrapped around his little finger, and indeed his whole fore-arm. It's disgusting. At first I thought he was just luring them to make them into Calamari, of which he is fond. THAT's disgusing too. But when I suggested that he derided me for not being able to tell an octopus (eight legs) from a squid (10 apparently!).
But the whole sub-aqua theme does make us feel a little bit as if we're playing Bioshock all the time. Which is nice.
