SEGA has announced that it has The Creative Assembly, the developer behind the
Total War series, hard at work on its first made-for-console real time strategy game dubbed
Stormrise.
So, what does it offer? SEGA's keen to point out that players control units over multiple levels thanks to the availability of units on land, in the air, on rooftops and underground. "Verticality" is what SEGA's calling it.
SEGA also points out that the point of view is from the front line, putting you in the baking heat of battle rather than detached and up in the sky as is often the wont of RTSes. A bit like
EndWar, then...
SPOnG has to admit to a shudder of undelight when we realised that the game features a post-apocalyptic setting and challenges (in SEGA's words) "the conscience of the gamer". The way in which our conscience is mostly being challenged right now is in our decision on whether to kick Ralph, the office ferret, in annoyance at SEGA wanting to challenge our consciences.
“The Creative Assembly have proven their general leadership in developing RTS games through the award winning ‘
Total War’ series on PC”, offered Gary Knight, European marketing director for SEGA Europe. “However,
Stormrise has been built from the ground up specifically for high def consoles to provide a more intense, frenetic style of game that, coupled with the all new control mechanic, will revolutionise the way RTS games are played.”
All this talk of revolution makes us a little nervous. If The Creative Assembly really wants to push the boat out, it'll have a lot to contend with thanks to
EndWar's voice control system.
