How many devs does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

darkSector Developer Assisting on BioShock PS3
Digital Extremes, the developer behind darkSector, has signed up to help 2K with the porting of BioShock to the PlayStation 3.

That puts the number of studios working on the PS3 version of the game at four - 2K Marin, 2K Boston, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes. That comes from Take Two, 2K's parent company. When Take Two announced that BioShock would hit the PS3, it only stated that 2K Marin would work on the game. 2K Boston and 2K Australia formerly made up Irrational Games and originally created BioShock.

So why has an extra developer been brought in? "By partnering with Digital Extremes, 2K Games is delivering a fully optimized experience that takes advantage of the PlayStation 3 system hardware", uttered Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Bringing Digital Extremes on board allows us to continue to deliver the best experience possible to our fans."

Ah, a "fully optimised experience"! That explains... not a lot.

On behalf of Digital Extremes James Schmalz, the developer's CEO and founder, said, "When 2K approached us to assist with development on BioShock for the PlayStation 3 system, it was a no-brainer. You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PlayStation 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."

No help there, either. Is porting a game from the 360 or PC to the PS3 really such a big job that it requires four studios to be involved?
