Among a variety of information to come from Sony's recent strategy meeting is one slide that contains some text that appears to have been written by a three-year old (or a business analyst) but does point the way to a slimmer, less expensive PS3. The words in question are "Accelerating cost down efforts". Using the power of SPOnG's CorproBS tranalator-matron, we've parsed this to mean, "Trying to make the Stuff Cheaper".
The detail, contained in three lines on a slide called 'Achieving Profitability in FY (Fiscal Year) 08':
"Accelerating cost down efforts
Chip shrink
Reducing the number of components"
While neither of the details comes as a huge surprise - the 40Gb PS3 features two fewer USB ports than the initial SKU, for example - stating that these reductions will be made before March 31st 2009 is. The cost-reductions will obviously please investors. Let's hope that they are passed on to gamers or potential gamers.
But it's not only the hardware that will be getting smaller. Three more lines show that if you're a Sony Computer Entertainment employee then that redundancy insurance might be looking like a good idea after all.
"Strengthening the management"
The use of 'Strengthening' in this sense is very much akin to that used in gardening - only gardeners call it 'pruning'.
The detail appears in two lines:
"Organizational review
Further reductions on SGA (sales and general admin)"
So, a slimmer and lighter PS3 and management team?
