PS3 Slim'n'Lite for Fiscal 2008?

Shrinkage not always a bad thing.

PS3 Slim'n'Lite for Fiscal 2008?
Among a variety of information to come from Sony's recent strategy meeting is one slide that contains some text that appears to have been written by a three-year old (or a business analyst) but does point the way to a slimmer, less expensive PS3. The words in question are "Accelerating cost down efforts". Using the power of SPOnG's CorproBS tranalator-matron, we've parsed this to mean, "Trying to make the Stuff Cheaper".

The detail, contained in three lines on a slide called 'Achieving Profitability in FY (Fiscal Year) 08':

"Accelerating cost down efforts
Chip shrink
Reducing the number of components"

While neither of the details comes as a huge surprise - the 40Gb PS3 features two fewer USB ports than the initial SKU, for example - stating that these reductions will be made before March 31st 2009 is. The cost-reductions will obviously please investors. Let's hope that they are passed on to gamers or potential gamers.

But it's not only the hardware that will be getting smaller. Three more lines show that if you're a Sony Computer Entertainment employee then that redundancy insurance might be looking like a good idea after all.

"Strengthening the management"

The use of 'Strengthening' in this sense is very much akin to that used in gardening - only gardeners call it 'pruning'.

The detail appears in two lines:

"Organizational review
Further reductions on SGA (sales and general admin)"

So, a slimmer and lighter PS3 and management team?

Its interesting looking at Sony's situation since the PS3 came out - Ken has got 2 demotions, Phil left the company to work for...Atari wtf??? Kaz went awol and was replaced, they went from 60gb to a crappy 40gb PS3...Oh and they had lay offs and now maybe more...

Oh and reducing the components let me guess the new spec:

30gb PS3 with 1USB port, no wi-fi to make the PS3 even more affordable...

Microsoft is investing, making money and promoting and making the Xbox 360 better and better like bringing out the Elite and Sony is going in the opposite direction...

Good news from Sony, the leader in innovation. once this PS3 comes down another $100 in price, game over for the competition. No other console can boast the power, name brand loyalty and commitment to gamers like Sony. A state of the art device, built form the ground up to be powerful, secure and open. No nickel and dime add on like the xbox2 or the Wii. Batteries, out. Charge and play, included. Online multiplayer, included for free. Not to mention BluRay storage for games and movies, HDMI 1.3, blue tooth devices, USB printers, headset etc. So much tech the hardcore gamer wants. Oh also a well engineered device that will last. Xbox2 is an ok product but it reeked of desperation from it's birth, and is slowly fading away as PlayStation next gen picks up. Kudos to Sony.

Yes, there's certainly feverish demand for usb printers among the gaming hardcore. They're top of practically everyone's wishlist.

PS3 Slim? Does that mean it comes with an iPod hard drive inside of it? I'm all for PS3 being cheaper, so I can buy one. Problem is PS3 is done for, you can already get a 360 for like £140-150. 360 has already beat PS3 into the earth and its not gonna change any time soon.

Sure, Blu Ray is nice but without HDTVs, which the majority of the population still haven't up graded to, its uptake will be luke warm beyond the hardcore.
