Afro Samurai Game Due Autumn
Namco Bandai has re-stated its intention to put out a game based on the anime series Afro Samurai, which stars Samuel L Jackson, with a vague release date.

"This fall" is when we can expect the game (in North America, at least) according to Namco Bandai. It will be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The game was initially announced waaaaayyy back in August 2005, but Namco Bandai went quiet on the subject after that. Quiet, but not silent. The publisher did put out a teaser video alongside the Video Game Awards last year. You can see it below.

The game will be based on the series of the Manga of the same name, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Afro and his chatty sidekick, Ninja Ninja.

Afro Samurai’s unique mash-up of urban hip hop culture with traditional Japanese aesthetics and innovative combat mechanics provides a fresh new approach to the action adventure genre”, said Todd Thorson, director of Marketing and Public Relations for Namco Bandai Games America. “Afro Samurai delivers an episodic experience with addictive, immersive and compelling gameplay that’s literally dripping in style.”

Of the game, Namco Bandai tells us, "A striking art style gives Afro Samurai a truly unique look and feel across beautifully animated open environments as he wages war against his adversaries to become number one. Using an innovative gameplay system, enemy AI is affected by the beat of the musical score produced by RZA of Wu-Tang Clan fame. These dynamic battles ensure stylized encounters throughout the game that affect the overall tone of gameplay. Slice and dismember opponents as Afro acrobatically leaps from one location to the next, interacting with anything and everything in the environment to help him on his journey."

The story of Afro Samurai follows Afro as he battles his way to find and kill Justice, holder of the number one headband and thus godlike power, as well as killer of his father. There's a catch, however. To do it, Afro has to possess the number two headband. Fortunately, he's already got it. Unfortunately, everyone else wants it so they can take a shot at the number one. It's all refreshingly light on plot, frankly, instead focussing on acrobatic fight scenes that drip with the red stuff. Sounds like the makings of a great game to SPOnG.
