Disney Interactive has confirmed the title of (and a few choice details from) its upcoming sequel to
Spectrobes on the Nintendo DS.
Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals is what Disney's calling it.
As for the new features? Disney tells us to expect “an entirely new story; a new three-dimensional perspective; a map to assist with exploration; new excavation and battle features; more creatures; and the debut of an online battle system utilising the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.”
The game will also make use of Disney's DGamer technolgy, a social networking platform which is in the works for the DS.
“
Spectrobes has become an international sensation”, said Craig Relyea, senior VP of global marketing for Disney Interactive Studios. “By continuing to build on its enthralling story, unique gameplay features and memorable characters,
Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals will continue to thrill fans. This second game is part of our plan to expand the series in the coming years.”
When
SPOnG spoke to Disney Interactive's executive vice president and general manager, Graham Hopper, last year, he said of the
Spectrobes franchise, “It’s the kind of property where right now, even though we don’t have any particular plans for it, you can easily see it becoming a movie, a TV series, costumed characters in a theme park, a merchandise range and toys and so on around it.”
Spectrobes: Beyond The Portals is being developed by Jupiter Corp, the Japanese studio behind the first game in the series.
Portals, eh? No, there can be no connection surely between... no, there isn't.
