Nintendo has confirmed that
Mario Kart Wii will have text-chat "while you're waiting for races".
This has lead to Internet jabberings that Nintendo has somehow announced that there is to be no voice chat. These are burblings about an announcement that was never made regarding functionality that was never promised. Ignore them.
The fact is that there is pre-race text chat confirmed.
So, with it being a huge game for Nintendo and the Wii - and what with this update coming with earshot of the announcement of
Pay & Play for the Wii Wi-Fi Connection - rumours are also kicking around that
Mario Kart Wii's online play will, at least in part, be paid.
We asked Nintendo if there was any basis of truth in this and were told, "No. Nothing has been announced".
Back to what we do know - aside from the addition of pre-race text chat, the information (which can be
found here) also confirms much of what we already knew - to wit:
"Play against up to 12 players, download and share ghost data and race friends via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Plus, you can take part in events organised by Nintendo in the Mario Kart Channel.
"Perform special tricks to score some serious speed boost with the new bikes and supped-up karts. Mario Kart Wii gives you more options than ever.
"Race as your Mii! Grab the Wii Wheel and race through the new and retro tracks as your favourite Mii. It’s like you’re in the game like never before!"
The game is due out on 11th April... stay tuned for more news.
