Blizzard has announced that it will launch a new type of tournament for
World of Warcraft.
The tournaments will take place in specially created realms, allowing players to create level 70 characters with epic equipment straight off the bat. The aim, Blizzard says, is to place the emphasis on "tactics and execution" rather than traditional adventuring.
The qualifiers will kick off in April. There will be two rounds in Europe, North America and South Korea and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. They will take the form of three vs. three matches, with the top four teams from each round progressing to regional finals to compete for $27,000 (£13,750) in cash prizes. Winners will then be sent forth to a global championship, where $120,000 (£61,000) will be up for grabs. The big money comes in the form of a $75,000 (£38,000) grand prize.
WoW players who don't feel quite so competitive - or feel wealthy enough that they're not fussed about winning £38K - will get a new experience later this year in the form of
World Of Warcraft: Wrath Of The Lich King - the upcoming expansion pack.
