THQ is wading in to rhythm-battle genre with a new Wii title going by the name of Band Mashups.

THQ promises an intriguing mix of action and rhythm-based game mechanics that "combines fast-paced combat with customizable bands in the fight for musical supremacy". The game will feature five musical styles: rock, funk/hip-hop, country, marching band and Latin, all controlled using the Wii Remote.

We'll let Randy Shoemaker, THQ's global brand director, tell you a bit more. "Band Mashups takes an innovative approach to the rhythm/action genre by blending music and combat in the ultimate battle of the bands”, he tells us. “Using a rhythm based game-play mechanic, the game delivers 70 over-the-top musical weapons and utilizes the Wii Remote’s functionality to deliver a completely original musical combat experience. Fighting with a sniper violin or flamethrower guitar is something gamers should definitely look forward to.”

The game will offer 30 "chart-topping hits" from the last 40 years, each recorded in each of the five featured musical styles. You can read a spot more on just why you might want to utilise a sniper violin over on SPOnG's dedicated game page.

While THQ sounds to have an interesting spin on the music game genre, it looks pretty clear that the company has seen the success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band and said 'we'll have some of that'. For the moment, at least, only the former franchise offers competition on the Wii in Europe, with Rock Band's release date over here still very much in the air.

Mashups, though, eh? Outside of middle America, aren't mashups like, so 2003. Answers in the Forum.
