Electronic Arts tries its hand at Bond again

EA trys to make amends

Electronic Arts has announced that it will be releasing a new James Bond game for the PlayStation 2.

The game will be called James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire and will be a mixture of recent games featuring the world’s suavest sleuth in as much as it will be half first person shooter and half racing game.

Electronic Arts has also stated that Agent Under Fire will contain many strategy and puzzle-solving elements. The company hasn’t yet made it clear if the game will do justice to the license.

It was a sad day for the gaming world when Rare lost the Bond license to Electronic Arts. EA has a reputation for not bringing out the best in the licenses the company currently has control over, FIFA being a prime example of this.

GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was such a brilliantly constructed gaming experience it was always going to be hard to top. Undeterred, Rare set about working on the sequel, which, when EA won the rights to Bond, became Perfect Dark, one of the best console games of all time.

EA’s answer to Perfect Dark was The World Is Not Enough, a lukewarm shooter by anybody’s standards. You could argue that GoldenEye is a much better film and was therefore easier to make a quality game from. After all, you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

Then came 007 Racer. This time no-one gave EA the benefit of the doubt. The game was flawed in every level and considered by many to be a waste of what was a brilliant concept.

Let’s hope that EA gets it right this time.
