Update: With regards to a Platinum range of budget titles being introduced for the PS3 in Europe, a Sony representative has told SPOnG, "We have introduced a Platinum range of best selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3. However, no decisions have yet been made on timing or line-up". The PlayStation 3 looks set to get a new budget line-up in Japan.
It's being reported that a Japanese online retailer (which has not been named) has posted listings for a set of games under the moniker "PlayStation 3 the Best" for ¥3,800 (£18). The line-up allegedly includes
Resistance,
FolksSoul (
Folklore if you're British),
Ninja Gaiden Sigma,
Gundam: Target in Sight, and
Ridge Racer 7. The release date is listed as March 19th.
The releases follow the tradition set for the PlayStation and PS2 with the "PlayStation/PlayStation 2 The Best" range, although they are priced slightly higher than their last-gen counterparts, which tended to be priced at ¥2,200 (£10.40).
SPOnG has contacted Sony for confirmation of the releases and to find out if we'll be seeing Platinum budget releases in Europe for the PS3 any time soon. While the news might not be official, the PlayStation 3 is over a year into its life cycle in Japan, and the timing is about right for some budget releases.
From Software certainly thinks so, anyway. The company recently re-released
Armored Core 4 for the PS3, beating the PlayStation 3 the Best titles to the budget punch.
For first-party titles, "PlayStation 3 The Best" titles will offer a saving of somewhere in the region of ¥2,200 (£10.40), while on third-party titles (which tend to be priced higher in Japan) the saving will be closer to the tune of ¥3,200 (£15).
