Halo 3 Laid Low for First Time Since Release
It (probably) had to happen sooner or later - and now it has. Halo 3 has been dislodged from the the top of the Xbox Live rankings.

Call of Duty 4 has done the honours, making Halo 3 only the second most played game on Xbox Live for the week of January 14th. Pah! This marks the first time Halo 3 has not sat atop the rankings since it was released in September and one of only a handful of times that a Halo game has not been Number 1 since Halo 2 first appeared.

Sat below you'll find another Activision title - Guitar Hero III. The publisher's obviously doing something right with its online offering.

Meanwhile, Metal Slug 3 claims the title of most bought Live Arcade title.

In other Xbox Live news, America now has SEGA's The Club demo, which was made available on the European service earlier this month.

Anyway, without further ado, you can see the Top 10 most played 360 Xbox Live titles (based on unique users) below:

1 Call of Duty 4
2 Halo 3
3 Guitar Hero III
4 Gears of War
5 Rock Band
6 Madden NFL 08
7 Assassin's Creed
8 Mass Effect
9 FIFA 08
10 Forza Motorsport 2

Hey Spong there is an error in that Xbox Live games list...Assassin's Creed only supports Live by showing that its being played and you can send messages and chat as per usual same with Mass Effect you cannot play this either on Live.

Those 2 titles are Live Aware only.

Anyways HALO 3 doesnt have the same good feel of HALO 2 even though it had modders on it.

COD4 is far more enjoyable.

If this chart is meant to be a rating of what's being played (as in ,"Top 10 most played 360 Xbox according to Live data") then it's perfectly valid to include Ass Creed and Mass Effect.

is it then?

'Cos I think thats a lot less interesting and useful than a list of the top games played online via LIVE! Much of the time, when I'm playing a game offline, I don't even hook up the Cat 5...meh, if I'm looking at LIVE! data I want to know who was playing what online, not who was playing what while they happened to be signed in...not that any of that is SPOnG's fault, if this is the only way the information is presented...if there is a list of games played online, then I'd rather have that please...

Also, these are worldwide numbers, yes?

meh, whadda ya gonna do, my mind boggles that people thought GoldenEye was playable, much less the exalted and overrated position it holds in the hearts and minds of many.

CoD4 multiplayer is icky...so close, but they had to go all cartoonish with the perks system, instead of hewing a more realistic path...the whole CoD4 multiplayer thing strikes me as catering to 1337z who want to pwn n00bz...yuck...

Well, I mean it's not like G64 had any real multiplayer FPS competition back then so it shined like a gleaming pearl! Not to mention it's one of the few movie-to-game translations that has actually been good in the history of video games, so that certainly doesn't hurt. I'm curious though; what exactly made it unplayable?

Besides, what other game can you use the 007 watch to detonate the mine-filled room your opponent just walked into?

For him that's the N64-controller as a whole. The problem would be though that playing Goldeneye on another controller then the N64-controller would make it even more unplayable, except if they change the controls...but then it wouldn't be Goldeneye anymore.

More shooters need to have remote-detonation weapons though... they're so fun!

C4 or Breaching Charge + Snake Cam = Fun :) on Rainbow 6 Vegas...

But yeah, I will accept the words which I find in my mouth.

Ha ha, fair enough. yes, I have considered the change in controller, but I don't see that the button remapping would be such a devastating blow necessarily. But it is true that the N64 controller WAS perfectly suited for the sceme...

Hmm, lets just be clear here.

I only agreed that what I find unplayable about GoldenEye is the 64 controller. But I don't think much of it in any event. The first viable console FPS I remember playing was Medal of Honor, it just worked for me. This was two years after GoldenEye, so there could well have been any number of games in the meantime that might qualify in my opinion.
