Yesterday a Dutch software dev called Engine Software apparently blurted out the 'information' that Nintendo's WiiWare channel will launch in March this year with Engine's
Project Bang game leading the way.
Explaining its game and the WiiWare downloadable service, Engine announced:
"WiiWare service is a new downloadable game content service that is scheduled to be launched in March 2008"
Apparently no one at Engine told Nintendo first, because having contacted the latter today, we were tersely informed, "Nintendo has made no announcement regarding the launch date of WiiWare".
Well, that is technically true of course. In the sense that we're to take the word 'date' in this case to mean day/month/year (maybe even time and restaurant).
However, a slightly less hardcore take on the word, can be taken in the light of
Nintendo's June 27th 2007 announcement:"WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers. The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.
"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."
So, of course no launch "date" has been announced and the plot appears to thin out in the light of Nintendo spokesman, Chris Olmstead, telling TechNewsWorld, that the Engine press release "...was an incorrect and unconfirmed release".
This was followed up with Ruud van de Moosdijk, Engine's vice president of development, stating that, "The date of March 2008 as launch date for the WiiWare service is not based on any information we have received from Nintendo. We don't have inside information regarding the WiiWare launch date in any territory.
"In hindsight the words 'is scheduled to launch in March 2008' were badly chosen ... 'that will presumably be launched in March 2008 in Japan,' would have been a better -- more correct -- sentence".
Right, sure, absolutely. Well, this is the kind of thing you should expect when you give "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace..." - they go out and tell people blatant untruths about when your new Wii channel is going to be released.
Or just possibly they are working to that deadline and someone forget to clear the press release? No, surely that would be daft.
As a memory note for all, bear in mind that Sony's online offering - in the form of PlayStation Home - is due for a roll-out in Spring 2008 (
maybe even early April). We're yet to hear what Xbox Live has lined up for shiny and new 2008 goodies, but surely March/April 2008 might see something on the cards.
