We have exclusively learned that Sonic Team is well underway with work on a sequel to the epic multiplayer RPG Phantasy Star Online.
This will come as good news to European PSO players, as the much hyped Version 2 of the original game, allowing players to achieve level 200, will be released in Japan and the States later in the month. On this note, all servers will be down between the 24th and 27th of April while Sega completes necessary upgrade work.
Our Sega source told us, “I can confirm that the main focus of Sonic Team is on the sequel to Phantasy Star Online. This is not an upgrade but an entirely new game that, at present is scheduled for release at Christmas this year. It is expected that the game will first appear on Dreamcast, followed by a variety of other consoles.”
This is the first time that a sequel has been confirmed for Phantasy Star Online and we are pleased to bring you this news first. “The new game has not been announced yet because there are many important points that need to be finalised,” we were told. “Because Sega has created a divide between the territories, in releasing PSO Version 2, there may be compatibility issues with releasing a new version across all territories that is compatible with the original. We have to be sure that the new game will create a level playing field across all countries and all platforms.
“At present we have been given no specific game details of the new PSO title. Sonic Team, although they are about 80% finished with the game, still have some important decisions to make. One of the top priorities will be to make the game completely secure. We underestimated the level of game manipulation that took place when we released the first version of Phantasy Star. A combination of hackers attacking the servers, in every country I might add, and people using game enhancers, made for some difficult work when policing the original.”
As details of the all-new Phantasy Star Online game become apparent, we will let you know.
